Who is Harlock?

OOC Note As common with Leiji Matsumoto's works, Harlock's personality and appearance is largely the same, but his history and relationships with other characters can vary wildly depending on which work one looks at, for consistency I am primarily pulling from the 1978 anime.

The year is 2979 AD, and Harlock is the captain of the Arcadia - a uniquely designed spaceship that was tailored for piracy.

A man who strongly believes in the concept of individual will and freedom, Harlock rebelled against a corrupt and incompetent government on earth and battle an imperialistic invasion force. He allowed anyone to join his crew if they swear to fight for what's in their heart - and does little to enforce any particular order or ideology on the ship, only directing orders during battle. Long as it doesn't endanger the Arcadia or the entire crew, Harlock allows people to do as they please. One could say he's the ultimate cheerleader, never directing but encouraging people to do what their heart wish or to finish what they resolve to do.

Harlock considers protecting the Earth his duty, but he personally has ambivalent feelings about it - detesting the government and disgusted by it's polluted state, but because a Dear Friend loved it and that said friend's daughter lives there, he will never shirk from this self-appointed task.

Personally, Harlock is a man who always keeps his promise no matter how difficult or how much harm he would suffer for it. A man while happy to explain to his philosophy or his reasons for piracy, he does keeps his feelings and thoughts to himself, and is known to drink heavily when alone.
